Variable Valve Timing Control Valves

The VVT control valve – also known as the OCV (Oil Control Valve) or VVT solenoid – regulates oil flow to the camshaft sprocket, controlling phase shift in response to ECU commands. It is the electronic and hydraulic interface between the engine management system and the mechanical phaser: the ECU signals a target camshaft position, the solenoid valve opens or closes the appropriate oil circuit, and the sprocket rotates to the commanded angle.

When the control valve degrades – through contamination of its internal filtration, wear of the spool mechanism, or electrical failure of the solenoid coil – the ECU loses the ability to command phase changes accurately. The result is the same fault codes (P0011, P0021) and the same symptoms (rough idle, hesitation, timing noise) as a worn sprocket. Correct diagnosis between valve and sprocket is the key to a repair that holds.
