The multi v-belt — also known as the serpentine belt or auxiliary drive belt – drives the engine’s accessory systems: alternator, air conditioning compressor, power steering pump, and in many applications the water pump. It is a high-load component operating continuously under tension, subject to progressive wear from heat, flex cycling, and contamination.
Belt failure is not gradual. A broken or slipped serpentine belt disables the alternator, eliminates power steering assist, and – in engines where the water pump is driven by the auxiliary belt rather than the timing belt – stops coolant circulation immediately. The consequences range from a stranded vehicle to engine overheating damage.
