The vacuum pump supplies negative pressure to the brake servo and a range of vacuum-actuated components – turbo actuators, EGR valves, and central locking in some applications. Unlike most engine components, a vacuum pump failure is felt immediately by the driver: brake pedal effort increases sharply, and stopping distance extends, often without any warning light.
