Chain-driven timing systems are often described as maintenance-free. They are not. A timing chain stretches. Hydraulic tensioners wear. Guide rails crack and detach. When a chain system fails – at 150,000 km or at 80,000 km in a design-critical application – the consequences are the same as belt failure: valve-to-piston contact, engine destruction.
