VANATEC™ Timing Chain – Hardened Pins

A timing chain does not break suddenly. It wears first, at the point of contact between the chain pins and the sprocket teeth. (see note 2)

VANATEC™ is a HEPU® technology that hardens the chain pins by vanadium diffusion, exactly where elongation occurs. In a comparative test, the result was close to 50% less elongation of the new timing chain offered by HEPU®.

What happens when a chain elongates

Key facts
  • Pin–bushing contact wear – the invisible start of the problem
  • Chain elongation – link by link
  • Valve timing shift – timing correlation fault codes, e.g. P0016/P0017
  • Tensioner and guide rail overload – noise, impacts and rattling on cold start
  • Chain jumping teeth – valve-to-piston contact and engine damage

Symptoms of an elongated timing chain

  • metallic rattling or clattering on cold start that fades after a few seconds
  • valve timing fault codes, e.g. P0016/P0017, and the check engine light
  • rough engine running
  • metallic noise from the timing drive area, especially when the engine is cold

If these symptoms appear, diagnose the system, including lubrication. Then replace the complete timing kit, not just the chain.

What accelerates chain wear

Most often, lubrication. Long oil change intervals, sludged oil passages and pressure drops make the hydraulic tensioner respond with a delay. The chain runs in a pulsating manner, alternately slack and taut, and the jerks hammer the pins. That is why pin hardness and wear resistance matter so much.

A chain doesn't "stretch".
It wears.

Stretched timing chain - where elongation comes from

In workshops, people say the chain „has stretched“. In reality, the links do not stretch like rubber. The chain elongates because the contact surfaces between the pins and bushings wear. A chain has dozens of these joints. Microscopic wear at each of them adds up along the entire length, and the chain becomes longer.

The following example shows the scale: for a 1,000 mm chain, elongation of 0.269% means an increase in length of approx. 2.7 mm, and elongation of 0.136% means approx. 1.4 mm. The tensioner can compensate for these values, but only up to a point. Every millimetre shifts the relative position of the camshaft and the crankshaft.

About the technology

VANATEC™ – the smallest component, redesigned

VANATEC™ is a technical and quality standard for timing chains, defined by HEPU®. It is based on vanadium diffusion on the chain pins, the component where wear begins.

The treatment method itself is not our invention and is not patented. Our work consisted of cooperation with a specialised production partner. Together we selected and defined the parameters a chain in a HEPU® kit must meet, and we combined them into a single standard under the name VANATEC™.

VANATEC™ is a protected trademark of HEPU®.

Pin hardening by vanadium diffusion
VANATEC™ chain pins undergo thermochemical treatment in a molten salt bath at 900–970 °C. Vanadium penetrates the steel surface and forms a very hard vanadium carbide layer. The pins are then vacuum-hardened and tempered to produce a hard surface and a strong core.

Why a salt bath?

A liquid bath fully surrounds each pin, so the diffusion layer is uniform across the entire surface. Powder methods make this uniformity harder to achieve. A uniform layer is exactly what determines how a pin wears in practice.

A diffusion layer, not a coating

A conventional coating forms a separate layer on the pin surface, which can gradually wear or flake off in service. In VANATEC™ technology, the hardened layer forms by diffusion directly within the surface layer of the pin material. It is therefore not a separate coating prone to wear during operation.
  • 0.009–0.012 mm – vanadium carbide layer thickness
  • up to 2,300 HV – surface hardness measured by the Vickers method (standard pins reach 650–800 HV)
  • tempered martensite core – hard surface, strong interior

Timing chain durability test

Results after 800 h

We compared four pin surface treatments under identical conditions: 800 hours of continuous operation at 5,500 rpm. Under real-world operating conditions, this corresponds to a vehicle mileage of approx. 150,000 km.

Pin surface treatment Chain elongation after 800 h
VANATEC™ (vanadium diffusion) 0.136%
Enhanced carbonitriding 0.181%
Diffusion chromizing 0.198%
Standard carbonitriding 0.269%

Test result: close to 50% less elongation than with standard carbonitriding, which means approx. 2× higher wear resistance in this test.

Tested from every angle
  • Hardness testing
  • Metallographic analysis
  • Surface roughness measurement
  • Chain durability and wear resistance testing
  • Installation test in an OEM vehicle

Note: The comparative test of pin surface treatments was carried out under identical conditions. The results describe chain wear and elongation, not total service life in a specific vehicle. Service life also depends on lubrication, servicing and operating conditions.

Workshop tip

Every time you replace a timing chain drive, change the oil and filter and check the oil pressure. A hardened pin is no substitute for correct lubrication, and a working hydraulic tensioner needs the right pressure.

Timing chain replacement – why always a complete kit

The timing drive works as a single unit: the chain, tensioner, guide rails and sprockets operate within tightly defined tolerances. Even the best chain cannot make up for a worn guide rail or a tensioner from a different kit. That is why VANATEC™ reaches the workshop as part of a complete HEPU® timing kit, designed, matched and tested to work together.

One manufacturer = full compatibility = full responsibility.

VANATEC™ – frequently asked questions

Is this a technology developed by HEPU, or a collaboration between HEPU and a company that already uses it?

VANATEC™ is a HEPU technology concept, developed and defined in close cooperation with our specialised production partner.

The production processes and material treatment methods themselves are not exclusive HEPU inventions. However, HEPU selected and defined the relevant technical parameters for our timing chain programme and combined them within the VANATEC™ technology concept.

The idea behind VANATEC™ is to make these technical improvements clearly recognisable and understandable to the market. The alternative would be communicating them only as individual material or production specifications.

VANATEC™ is therefore a defined HEPU technical and quality standard within our timing chain portfolio.

Does the VANATEC™ name / trademark belong to HEPU?

VANATEC™ is a protected trademark owned by HEPU.

It stands for our advanced timing chain technology and the corresponding technical and quality standard within the HEPU portfolio.

When will VANATEC™ be available? Is there a specific date from which kits will contain only the new chains?

The VANATEC™ rollout has already started and will proceed in stages.

We deliberately started with some of the most sensitive and technically demanding engine applications, where we see the greatest benefit from this technology.

For the affected references, the changeover will happen gradually, depending on existing stock levels, production cycles and availability. There will therefore be no single switchover date for the entire portfolio.

Will the entire current chain kit portfolio be replaced with VANATEC™ chains?

In the first stage, approx. 20 HEPU chain kits will receive VANATEC™ technology.

Our goal is to expand this to approx. 40 references by the end of 2026. The rollout will continue in stages, based on technical requirements, relevance and the potential benefit of VANATEC™ for each engine application.

Will the VANATEC™ name be visible on the packaging?

Yes. Kits with a VANATEC™ chain will be marked with an additional graphic on the packaging.

Should we expect price increases for VANATEC™ products?

The introduction of VANATEC™ technology will involve only a minor price adjustment. At the same time, it offers the customer added value through increased durability, higher wear resistance and greater long-term reliability.

This is backed by an extended warranty of 6 years or 120,000 kilometres.

Will the old and new versions be available in parallel?

During the transition period, yes. Existing stock of the current version will be sold until depleted, and the VANATEC™ versions will be introduced gradually.

It is worth mentioning that all other HEPU chains and chain kits have already been 100% converted to diffusion chromizing (chromium diffusion, Cr).

What tests were carried out?

VANATEC™ chains and pins underwent a comprehensive series of technical tests:

  • hardness testing
  • metallographic analysis
  • surface roughness measurement
  • chain durability and wear resistance tests
  • an installation test in an OEM vehicle

Hardness testing showed a surface hardness of up to 2,300 HV. Vanadium diffusion treatment creates an extremely hard surface layer on the chain pins, designed to improve wear resistance and durability.

Under what conditions were the tests carried out?

The endurance test was run at 5,500 rpm for 800 hours. By conservative estimates, this corresponds to more than 150,000 km of vehicle use.

The aim of the test was to compare wear and chain elongation behaviour for different pin surface treatments under the same test conditions.

What mileage / life-cycle results were achieved in the endurance tests?

The endurance test ran continuously for 800 hours at 5,500 rpm, corresponding to more than 150,000 km of vehicle use.

We have clear comparative results against conventional heat treatment methods for chain pins.

In the 800-hour test, VANATEC™ showed:

  • chain elongation of 0.136% with VANATEC™ pins vs 0.269% with standard carbonitriding, equal to approx. 2× higher wear resistance under the same test conditions.

Do installation procedures change?

No. Installation procedures for VANATEC™ chains remain the same.

Is the technology compatible with all existing applications?

Yes, the technology is fully compatible.

How does VANATEC™ affect the durability of related components such as sprockets, guides and tensioners?

VANATEC™ primarily improves wear behaviour in the chain pin/bushing contact zone, one of the critical areas responsible for chain elongation.

At the same time, the timing drive must always be treated as a complete system. The chain, sprockets, guides and tensioners work together and are subject to tightly defined tolerances and interactions.

For this reason, the entire timing system should always be replaced together. Using components from a single supplier helps ensure that the individual parts are designed, matched and tested to work together within the same tolerance concept.

That is exactly why a complete HEPU timing chain kit should always be used, rather than the chain alone as a separate part.
